For example, magnetized rotors can attract small metal particles that can dirty the lubricating oil, damage winding insulation, cause stray currents, and prematurely wear away at bearings or close clearance areas such as turbine diaphragms.
Not commonly known, magnetized equipment can also cause false vibration proximity probe readings which can repeatedly set off alarms. This serious issue distracts personnel from monitoring other necessary items.
When demagnetizing should be considered:
